An Artistic License

Ray Petty.

He is not influenced or knowledgeable about other artists, styles, materials or mediums – he just does what feels correct to him in the moment.

Ray hadn’t picked up a paintbrush in forty years.  The last time he did he was employed to age and colour maps – one of a variety of odd jobs he has undertaken in his 62 years.   And there have been some very odd jobs and business ventures.

He possibly would not have done so again apart from his partner buying him brushes and paint believing perhaps that it may help him to stop talking in his sleep if he had an outlet for all the noise in his head.  A tool to decompress.

The ‘gift’ sat in a corner of his bedroom for six months before he chose to paint. And he hasn’t stopped since! He has been surprised at how very fast and frenetic his style of painting is. He has said that he doesn’t have any idea of where the creations come from, what they mean or symbolise … but he suspects that that they come from a place deep in his unconscious mind as they absolutely have a drive of their own.

He has said that he has an ‘idea’. Perhaps a single colour, and once he starts to paint the piece takes on a life all of its own.

He has had no art lessons since his school days. And doesn’t want to take any either believing that what he creates will resonate with some and not with others … and he’s absolutely okay with that.

He is not influenced or knowledgeable about other artists, styles, materials or mediums – he just does what feels correct to him in the moment.

He sees his partner Annette as his muse. Having connected during the witching hours of the millennium on a beach in Goa they then spent seventeen years apart before reconciling in 2017. She believes that he is one of the most original, deep, unique minds of our time and his art had to come out somehow. His paintings are simply an extension of who he is. Interesting, colourful, dynamic, crazy and beautiful.
